Master of Counselling Psychology (MCP)
Registered Clinical Counsellor
Makita Wiggins is a graduate of Adler University and has worked with youth, adults, seniors, families, and couples, helping these diverse populations to cope with life’s challenges. She brings with her a wealth of transferable skills such as working with children both in Barbados and Vancouver, facilitating parenting workshops and supporting older adults with issues regarding aging and mental health matters.
Makita believes in establishing an open empathic environment for clients as the foundation to facilitate a strong therapeutic relationship. She believes this to be the first step in creating a safe space for clients to explore their presenting issues and develop healing and recovery. The creation of this safe space is crucial in allowing clients to feel heard and understood as they grow at their own pace. Makita uses a variety of techniques and interventions during sessions which have been designed to match individual needs. These approaches include but are not limited to Cognitive Behavioural Theory (CBT), Existential, Feminist, and Narrative. She also has extensive experience in career counselling and utilizes expressive and mindfulness techniques wherever they seem helpful for clients.
Being a recent immigrant to Canada, Makita understands the challenges faced with transitioning to a new country. This understanding has significantly informed Makita’s counselling practice as she operates from a place of openness and genuineness with all clients. Makita believes that individuals are the authors of their own lives and that they have the responsibility and ability to “edit” stories that no longer seem to provide sufficient meaning or purpose, when provided the opportunity and support to do so.
Makita provides counselling services in English and understands most Caribbean Creoles and Dialects.
